Update Notes:

This is the first in a series of updates to create a new explorable underground adventure. While there are plenty of fun things to find and experiment with down there right now, please keep in mind that this is just an early version of our overall vision for the caves.

Just because the beta is over doesn't mean we're done. We've put together a very special trailer for our introduction of caves. Enjoy

NOTE: The Caves are still extremely early, and we are showing pre-Alpha content. As we continue to update the game, the Caves will fill out into a lively world for all to enjoy.

Update Trailer:A Little Rain Must Fall

The latest Don't Starve update is now live and it's one of our largest to date. We hit a few snag today while Steam irons out a few issues. Please make sure to read the two important notes below.

Important Note:

Steam seems to be having some technical difficulties in sending the update to some computers. If you encounter problems, you should be able to fix them by uninstalling Don't Starve and then reinstalling it. You may have to validate files after you do this in order to force the update after that.

As such, it's a bit sparse compared to our grand vision, and you may encounter bugs. We'll be fixing things and adding new monsters, objects, and mechanics down there for 3-4 more updates.

  • We've added the first pass of the new caves biome. Who knows what's down there. You should be able to find one cave entrance somewhere on survival maps generated post-launch but before this update. Newly generated maps will have a handful of different entrances, all leading to different caves.
  • Shift-click moves items between open containers. Ctrl-Shift-click manipulates stacks in the same way
  • Abigail and Chester no longer trigger traps
  • Hammering is a RMB action
  • Bush hat hide is an RMB toolbar action

Caves are coming to Don't Starve! Once we decided on this, we were faced with the challenge of answering "What does it sound like in a cave?"

To find out, we sent our audio department (AKA: Matthew Marteinsson) on an expedition to the Britannia Mining Museum so he could record the ambiance of a giant hole in the ground first hand! You don't want to know how we made him get the sounds for the insanity update.

Accompanied by Yanni Fyssas from Hybrid Soundworks, the two set off with recording gear in hand to simulate the depths of Don't Starve's caves inside of a mine.

Along with capturing the sound of the location (which was very quiet) they recorded a bunch of impulses as well.

"What the heck is an impulse?"

Well, an impulse allows you to use a convolution reverb to make other sound effects seem as if they happened in a certain space after the fact.
