Caves are coming to Don't Starve! Once we decided on this, we were faced with the challenge of answering "What does it sound like in a cave?"
To find out, we sent our audio department (AKA: Matthew Marteinsson) on an expedition to the Britannia Mining Museum so he could record the ambiance of a giant hole in the ground first hand! You don't want to know how we made him get the sounds for the insanity update.
Accompanied by Yanni Fyssas from Hybrid Soundworks, the two set off with recording gear in hand to simulate the depths of Don't Starve's caves inside of a mine.
Along with capturing the sound of the location (which was very quiet) they recorded a bunch of impulses as well.
"What the heck is an impulse?"
Well, an impulse allows you to use a convolution reverb to make other sound effects seem as if they happened in a certain space after the fact.
